Local data security solutions provider J2 Software has warned that data theft is on the increase worldwide. It says the new wave of criminal does not necessarily want the laptop or desktop computer, but they are more interested in the all important data that is stored on ones machine.
According to J2 Software managing director John Mc Loughlin, data contained on computers is worth far more money than the machine itself. "Computers typically contain personal and business information, information about oneself, ones friends and family. More importantly, it contains corporate trade secrets and customer information."
Statistics show that more often only the hard drives are removed from the machines, a clear indication that criminals are merely interested in the sensitive and secure data. Most companies in South Africa have security measures to protect their assets. This normally includes security, armed response, alarm systems, CCTV, cable locks and physical bolts in the ground. However, this has proved to be insufficient when it relates to data theft.
"What else could they have done to protect the data?" asks Mc Loughlin. This includes physical security in terms of cable locks, case locks, alarms and most importantly, prevention of access to data.
