Java now on iPAQ
Sun Microsystems' Sun Java Wireless Client is now available on the latest HP iPAQ smartphone, says eWeek.com.
Java ME is based on the Sun Java Wireless Client software and has been enhanced with features designed specifically for HP's new HP 3G smartphone.
Sun officials said Sun Engineering Services delivered the Java ME binary implementation customised and tuned to a specific feature set requested by HP.
Poison program wins award
Computer science students from the University of the Philippines have won an international award for a Java program that enables doctors in rural areas to access a database of common poisons using their mobile phones, reports Manila Standard Today.
Diana Bandojo, Ma Jaymee Gatapia and Reggie Santos were named winners in the medical solutions category of the Duke's Choice Award, an annual and global search for innovative programs running on the Java platform.
The winning entry from the Philippines, ESP, uses a database of common poisons and a rules-based approach to assess the poisoning case and make recommendations. The team's technical paper says the ESP prototype has been validated in 50 test cases.
updates released
Sun has released Java updates that fix bugs and security holes in its Java Development Kit (JDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE), says The Inquirer.
The Java software flaws resolved by these updates reportedly include denial of service (DoS) vulnerabilities, buffer overflows and other errors in Sun's Java implementation that could cause a Java crash or expose a system to compromise by a maliciously crafted Java applet.
The updated versions are JDK and JRE 6 Update 7, JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 16, SDK and J2SE 1.4.2_18 and SDK and J2SE 1.3.1_23. Version 6, which is actually Java 1.6, is the most recently released Java version currently. All Java users are encouraged to switch to that latest version.
