Java open-sourcing too slow

Analysts say Sun Microsystems should speed up the open-sourcing of Java development code to increase innovation and ease of use, reports Tech News World.

Sun recently released source code for Java Mobile Edition development tools under the Common Development and Distribution Licence, prompting calls for all of Java to be released at the same time under the same licence.

However, Sun says it is working to ensure Java`s continued compatibility and to resolve licensing obligations within Java before it can be completely open-sourced.

Sony Ericsson joins Eclipse

Sony Ericsson is to join the Eclipse open source community as an add-in provider member to add benefit to the global mobile application developer community, reports Sys-con.

The handset manufacturer says Eclipse is language-independent, allowing it to cater for both Symbian UIQ 3 and Java Platform, Micro Edition developers.

Sony Ericsson has already released a plug-in providing Eclipse IDE integration for the Sony Ericsson Java CDC Platform 1 supported by the P990 smartphone and M600 messaging device.

Developers deny Ajax is a fad

An informal survey of developers has found that most agree that Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) is not a fad, but a tool that helps build better Web sites, reports Sys-con.

Ajax is described as the fastest-growing technology trend since the advent of Java 12 years ago.

According to developers, many companies are adopting Ajax into their because it enables a shift from developing form-based to component-based Web applications. They also say it is more efficient and less error prone.
