The Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE), at Wits University, and Dimension are to host a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) symposium next month.

The aim is to industry about the role that process improvement can play in the software development lifecycle.

The symposium will be held at DiData's Bryanston campus, on 2 and 3 September.

JCSE CEO and director professor Barry Dwolatzky says CMMI was developed 17 years ago by Carnegie Mellon University, to assist companies from a host of sectors to improve their development processes.

"This year, minister of trade and industry Mandisi Mpahlwa will again give the keynote address at the conference after opening the symposium last year. The symposium will also be addressed by the director and CEO of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), in Pittsburgh (US), Dr Paul Nielson," he says.

The first day will focus on senior to middle-level management from the public and private sectors and will be facilitated by DiData chairman Andile Ngcaba.

In addition, the conference will hear a number of international speakers, including Palma Buttles-Valdez, from the SEI, and Minoo Dastur, executive VP and COO of Indian-based Nihilent Technologies.

Local speakers will include Derek Wilcocks, services director at DiData Africa and the Middle East; Jonas Bogoshi, CEO of GijimaAst; Dwolatzky of the JCSE; and a panel discussion chaired by World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck.

The second day will focus on middle-level management and quality or technical practitioners from the private and public sectors.

"This year, the symposium will, therefore, emphasise the importance of change management and people issues in achieving success in process improvement initiatives," says Dwolatzky.
