To ensure it meets the challenge of being a 2010 host city, the City of Johannesburg has partnered with ITWeb to run the first ICT summit geared towards "making IT happen" for 2010.
The conference, Jo`burg Connect 2010, aims to address technology infrastructure challenges, as well as identify both direct and indirect ICT opportunities to ensure SA`s economic participation before, during and after the World Cup event.
It is scheduled to take place on 23 and 24 November at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Douglas Cohen, project manager within the City of Johannesburg`s Department of Economic Development - ICT Sector Support Programme, says: "As a host city, the City of Johannesburg plays a leading and key role in delivering on the ICT challenges pertaining to the 2010 FIFA World Cup."
Jo`burg Connect 2010, according to Cohen, will be pivotal in ensuring the legacy of the 2010 investment is leveraged in a broad-based, sustainable and successful manner. "Ideally to maximise innovation and future global market penetration for ICT firms based in Gauteng and SA, particularly for small and medium enterprises.
"By bringing all the key role players and 2010 stakeholders together with ICT industry players, we will be able to create an all-inclusive forum for information-sharing and collaboration - one that will enable us to address both ICT challenges and opportunities for 2010 and beyond.
"There are considerable ICT challenges ahead, given the scope of the 2010 World Cup event, but by no means does this suggest that we will not be ready," says Cohen.
His believes SA`s IT infrastructure constraints, while undoubtedly a limitation to both the city and the wider ICT sector, are par for the course.
