Johannesburg Water uses Xantium to improve service delivery

Johannesburg Water recently engaged Xantium Professional Services to help implement the Hansen solution set as part of the water utilities commitment to undertake more proactive management of its repair and maintenance processes. This implementation, the first of its kind in SA, went live on 1 August 2004.

"We needed a solution that would not only drive our ability to leverage and complement our existing systems, but also enable us to gain a clearer view of our operational and financial information residing within the organisation," says Paul Viljoen, Watersolve Project Coordinator at Johannesburg Water.

"As the company provides a service previously the responsibility of a number of municipalities in the greater Johannesburg area, we needed to create more transparency and ease of management of the assets under our control.

"Everything from sewerage plants, waste water plants, reservoirs, dams and underground pipes needs to be viewed from a repair and maintenance point of view, therefore the solution we choose had to have the ability to not only capture all information for a number of legacy systems, but give us access to the most up-to-date information to ensure the smooth and successful running of Johannesburg Water."

Therefore, Johannesburg Water chose to utilise the Hansen solution set, as this has been specifically designed for the municipal environment. "Hansen's solution, available through Xantium Professional Services, which are modular-based and hence cost-effective, were developed to specifically address the challenges of the public sector globally," says Deon Benad'e, Product Manager at Xantium Professional Services.

"Unlike other enterprise systems, they have not customised an existing market solution to try and fit the public sector, but rather built them from a true asset management base. In addition to this, Hansen's solutions have the capability to operate on various operating platforms ranging from Oracle, SQL and open standards, making it a diverse and flexible product."

"The Hansen solution has certainly aided our ability to drive more transparent information throughout the organisation allowing us to consolidate data and records, without creating duplication of efforts or impacting operational inefficiencies," adds Viljoen.

"Technologies can make a real difference to the way in which administrations work and citizens are able to access information. The South African public sector is working hard on the creation of a knowledge-based economy that will equip it to work more closely with the community and surrounding businesses, and Xantium Professional Services are well-positioned to support this drive," concludes Benad'e.
