The product is called "FOSS-in-a-box", an acronym for free and open source software. This concept is set to revolutionise the way that small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) across South Africa and the rest of Africa view the value added by software applications.
It will save SMEs thousands, and drastically shorten implementation times. JohnBoy Software's owner Richard Walton talks about how "FOSS-in-a-box" can be supplied to any SME on a server running Linux (a free and open source operating system alternative to Windows).
"The FOSS that we supply on the server will be dependant on what the SME is interested in and what could potentially help their business.
"Some examples are SugarCRM, an open source CRM product; TinyERP, an open source ERP product; or OSCommerce, an open source e-commerce product which enables an SME to sell their product(s) online. Any one of thousands of FOSS products can be easily and quickly implemented by us to benefit the SME.
"FOSS-in-a-box is simplicity. I believe it is the way of breaking free from the ties of proprietary software, licensing fees, and costly support contracts, and enables SMEs to make full use of open source, totally user-definable software.
"It makes the implementation of software that will benefit the SME simpler, quicker and cheaper."
Included in FOSS-in-a-box is a server, with JohnBoy's open source software pre-loaded, and a brief analysis of business processes and how open source software can benefit business.
