JourneyApps has a brand new look and feel!

By JourneyApps
Johannesburg, 18 Feb 2016

JourneyApps has an extremely powerful development platform that allows them to build fully functional business process apps within minutes. Their team of delivery engineers use the platform to solve complex business problems and handle even the most complex data tasks.

Their best-in-class platform has always allowed them to stay ahead of the curve in terms of development capability, and now they are proud to announce that their apps have a brand new look to match this powerful platform. Its brand new mobile look and feel, also incorporates extensive research on user experience.

"Usability and appearance can make or break a user's experience in an app," explains Ralf Kistner, JourneyApps CTO. "It is therefore very important to have a user interface (UI) design that is state-of-the-art. We now have a look and feel that matches our world-class platform capabilities."

What does this entail?
JourneyApps took all the components that their users already love and gave them a brand new look. Starting from scratch, every component was completely redesigned. But they didn't only look at the design, they also improved the general usability of their apps.

What process did they follow?
The process started in the middle of 2015 when JourneyApps contracted an external design agency to reconstruct the look and feel of their apps. After a series of iterations and fine-tuning, they brought the process back in-house and their lead designer, Liebrecht Fick, tweaked and finalised the designs. "It was important that the new user interface was clean, friendly and up to date, while not distracting the user from what JourneyApps does best - solving business problems," he says. The project team, consisting of Platform Engineers and Front-End Designers, then rebuilt and re-styled the core functionality of the apps in order to bring the designs to life.

Even faster development with one codebase
In the past, JourneyApps Platform Engineers had to develop code for Android and iOS separately when adding new features to their mobile apps. Having to build everything twice slowed them down and created a risk of discrepancies sneaking into the interfaces, capabilities and usability of the different platforms. One of the goals of this project was to unify the codebases into one. This has been a resounding success. JourneyApps can now take on projects that are even more ambitious and ship new features to their mobile apps even faster than they already do. They can also offer better app stability, with the same look and feel for Android, iOS and Chrome.

What does this mean for customers?

* Most importantly: All apps will continue to work as they always have.
* JourneyApps UI components, such as buttons and dropdowns, have been revamped.
* A hamburger-style menu to access functions such as Diagnostics has been included. This menu is more functional and easier to navigate.
* Validations within apps are handled more elegantly: Missing fields are highlighted and appropriate messages are displayed.
* A brand new set of icons has been created, optimised to look great within apps.
* There are fewer loading screens, now with subtle animations, making a user's first experience of apps as good as possible.
* The overall look has been improved to include sleeker fonts and more subtle colours.

How to get it:
From 18 February, the new look will automatically be rolled out to everyone using the public JourneyApps Containers (previously referred to as the "Journey Launchers") from the Android Play Store, the iOS App Store and the Chrome Web Store. Users just need to update their JourneyApps Container in the same way that they update any other mobile app to see the changes. Customers using branded containers will receive a new download link from the JourneyApps Solution Delivery Team to update their apps. Users with any questions should contact support@journeyapps.com.

To the journey ahead!
"This update is a quantum leap in terms of usability and appearance, and it positions us as the best in the business," says Machiel Reyneke, JourneyApps Product Manager. Next steps for JourneyApps include building beautiful new components so that customers can get even more out of their JourneyApps solutions.
