Joyent Cloud takes on Amazon

Gigaom.

The new and improved Joyent Cloud builds on the company's rethought SmartDataCenter 6 management technology, and adds more business to help corporate customers get a better handle on what's actually going on in their cloud-based infrastructure.

According to The Register, the new Joyent Cloud also adds an analytics tool - based on D-Trace, the open source dynamic tracing framework - that allows users to closely track the behaviour of their applications.

“We're building on the core technologies we've been working on for six years now, but we're also leveraging the engineering advancements our software team has made by integrating KVM into the Smart OS kernel,” says Steve Tuck, GM of the Joyent Cloud.

Joyent hopes to grab a larger share of the US public cloud market with the improvements and its use of the ZFS file system, writes PC World.

This system ensures consistency, and container-based virtualisation, which allows enterprises to quickly add more processing power when using Smart OS.

The wide variety of choices will be good for the overall industry, as different solutions will fill different needs.
