The Kenyan government`s shock decision to dissolve its communications regulator is one of the key issues to be discussed at the NewCom Africa 2005 event, taking place in London later this week.

Key government officials and telecommunication industry executives are expected to attempt to determine an appropriate response to the decision taken last week by the government to disband the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).

NewCom Africa 2005, which will focus on , technology and investment, and business partnerships that have proven effective for the rapid roll-out of telecom services in Africa, will host a multi-stakeholder forum for the formulation of a public and private sector response to the action.

The removal of the country`s top telecommunications leadership - a decision that has shocked the international ICT sector - has been described by the chairman of the Telecommunications Providers Association of Kenya, Joseph Mucheru, as "one of the darkest days in Kenya`s and Africa`s communications sectors".

Mucheru will be among the players to address the NewCom Africa summit, giving his organisation`s response to the government action.

The event, arranged by Aitec, will take place at London`s Chelsea Village between 15 and 17 March, and is being hosted under the auspices of the Global V-Sat Forum (GVF), a non-profit association for the global satellite communications sector.

"The CCK has taken major strides toward implementing a more liberalised telecoms policy, therefore we are concerned by the disruptive potential of this development and aim to formulate a co-ordinated response by the ICT community," says GVF secretary-general, David Hartshorn.
