Kenyan service provider AccessKenya is planning to expand its corporate Internet and telephonic activities in the East African country within the next few months.

Jonathan Somen, MD of AccessKenya, says the expansion plan comes after a private placement of shares was made by AccessKenya and its sister company Access, known locally as Blue.

"The company has raised around $1.5 million [KS100 million] by selling shares to some of Kenya's top businessmen over the past three months," says Somen.

AccessKenya is going to invest the money in more services, as well as expand the overall within its core markets, he says. "It is important for the company to invest in more modern technology to help gain wider customer reach."

In the past six months, the company has tested around five different potential solutions that could help gain customer reach, Somen says.

AccessKenya is also seeking to subsidise the cost of equipment of Yello, a voice over Internet Protocol service recently introduced by the company. "By subsidising the equipment, we will make telephone calls free for our customers."

Hoping for growth

"The Yello service is an important business entity, which we hope to see grow," he says.

The service offers free calls from subscriber to subscriber on the network and cheap rates off the network.

The group is also trying to provide customer value for money on its Broadband Max Internet solution. "AccessKenya has launched Broadband Max 2, which is providing customers with quadruple the amount of download time." Somen says the Internet solution has already started to make a positive impact.

The company will also purchase more Motorola solutions in a bid to further expand the Blue network coverage, which is part of a Motorola Canopy network.

The company, established in 1995, has seen 100% year-on-year growth in the past five years, says Somen. The company invests in around 100Mbps of international broadband and provides more than 1 200 links to a range of Kenyan businesses, including AMREF, Rockefeller Foundation, Central Bank of Kenya and Colgate Palmolive.
