Konica Minolta has been awarded a multimillion-rand contract to supply, install and maintain multifunctional devices for the Gauteng Provincial Government over a 24-month period.

Konica Minolta sales manager Stephen Sims says the Gauteng Provincial Government needed to consolidate its document production infrastructure.

"In the past it had purchased devices from a number of different suppliers, making it almost impossible for an organisation of its size to control costs or service levels. In some instances, there were no contracts and in other instances the contract clauses were unreasonable," he says.

The issuing and awarding of the tender was driven by the Gauteng Shared Service Centre and took two years to finalise. Criteria such as price, quality, total cost of ownership, capital value of equipment, maintenance and service levels were considered before the contract was awarded, Sims adds.

Five companies, all major players in the South African market, were short-listed before the final decision was made, he says.

He refuses to comment on the value of the contract, saying the Gauteng Provincial Government has requested for that information to remain confidential.

"The selection process was extremely thorough and I believe this deal establishes Konica Minolta as a major player in the public sector market," he says.

Konica Minolta is installing its monochrome and colour digital multifunctional copier range at various Gauteng Provincial Government offices. All devices have copying, printing, faxing and scanning capabilities.

"Our emphasis will be on ensuring the bulk of the organisation`s document production is routed in the most cost-effective and efficient manner," says Sims.
