Korea military networks under siege

South Korea's military computer networks have been under siege by ever-increasing cyber attacks, with the military countering a daily average of nearly 100 000 hacking attempts or virus infections, a lawmaker said, reveals Business Ghana.

The average daily number of cyber attacks against military computers rose to 93 720 cases last year, from 79 022 in 2008, 39 859 in 2007 and 29 681 in 2006, says Kim Ock-lee of the ruling Grand National Party in a report, citing from the defence ministry.

In the first six months of this year, the military reported an average number of 44 263 such cases per day, according to the report.

connects without intervening hotspot

The WiFi Alliance has put its imprimatur on new technology it calls WiFi Direct, says Smarthouse.

This will enable two devices equipped with WiFi to connect directly without need for an intervening WiFi hotspot.

Devices stamped with the WiFi Direct certification won't need networks, as they essentially become micro-hotspots, the company says.

10Gbps network package endorsed

Endace, the network performance monitoring group, has received a technical endorsement of a product it claims can monitor computer and trading networks running at 10Gbps without losing data, notes FT.

A quarterly test by NSS Labs, the US information security research group, confirmed the New Zealand-based group could monitor data packets as small as 1.7KB on a network.

NSS Labs regular tests are regarded as among the computer industry's toughest, says the company.
