Kulula.com has announced that its birthday special is over, following a flood of responses that crashed its online booking system over the weekend.
The birthday special, announced on Friday, offered flights to Cape Town at the reduced rate of R222 per ticket. Kulula hadn`t anticipated the overwhelming response, and its site went offline within hours of the radio advertisement.
"We got two additional servers to try and help us cope with the load," says Nadine Prinsloo, marketing manager at Kulula.com. "They did help to a certain extent, but with 40 times our normal load, even those weren`t enough."
Three days later, the company has sold out of the more than 12 000 discounted seats that were loaded onto the system. There is also a backlog of e-mail queries about the discounts.
"There is a box with a backlog or around 2 000 e-mails at the moment, because all of our call centre agents and manpower are devoted to responding to calls," says Prinsloo.
