Labat expands into East Africa with ICL

Johannesburg, 22 Jun 2004

Labat Software Solutions has appointed ICL East Africa as a software partner and sole distributor for the SSA Global product suite in the East African region of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Eritrea.

ICL East Africa, headquartered in Kenya, is the largest IT supplier and systems integrator in the region, representing companies such as Fujitsu Siemens, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. It is owned by the Sameer Group of companies, one of the foremost economic forces in East Africa with major investments in all key sectors of the economy.

"The agreement with ICL East Africa is the first in a line of planned partnerships with other ICL associated companies in Africa, following our stated objective of spreading our footprint across the continent," says Labat`s MD Mark Alexander.

"We chose ICL East Africa because of its successful relationships with major players in the IT industry. It has established a solid track record with clients and partners alike during its 70 years of operation, and was highly recommended by Sun Microsystems. It also has first-hand experience with one of our major ERP software products, SSA MAX."

As a distributor, ICL East Africa will be responsible for marketing, implementing, maintaining, and providing first-level support for the entire range of SSA Global software products Labat offers. The ICL team will undergo intensive training for all the products that will be distributed in the East African region.

A team in Kenya, headed up by applications software engineer David Wachira, will focus exclusively on taking the new range of products to market. With a dedicated support team in SA, Labat`s relationship manager Rachelle Boardman will manage and maintain the relationship with ICL East Africa, ensuring that any second-level support that may be required is received swiftly.

"Introducing SSA Global into East Africa will have a positive effect on the region`s business environment," Wachira says. "The market in Africa is maturing and government and organisations are increasingly understanding the value that can be achieved by improving their business processes through technology."

ICL East Africa has a strong presence in the region`s financial arena with clients like Barclays Bank and Standard Chartered Bank in Kenya, and the National Bank of Commerce in Tanzania. The company also has a strong presence in the insurance industry, in breweries in the region, and in various divisions within the Kenyan military.
