Laptop storage hits 500GB

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has unveiled the Travelstar 5K500, a 2.5-inch, 5400 RPM laptop drive with 500GB of capacity, says Enterprise IT Planet.

Also planned is the release the Travelstar E5K500, an enhanced-availability version for use in "lower transaction environments". Such applications include blades, video surveillance servers and point-of-sale terminals, according to the company.

Travelstar 5K500 ships in February 2008. The EA version, E5K500, will follow before Q2 2008 draws to a close.

IBM acquires storage system

IBM has agreed to acquire XIV, a privately-held developer of to run large enterprise storage systems, according to VNUNet.

The company estimates that XIV's Nextra platform is responsible for managing more than four petabytes of worldwide.

XIV will become part of IBM's Storage Systems and Technology Group when the acquisition is complete. It is the first acquisition made by the group in almost 10 years.

NetApp eyes vendor

Storage vendor Network Appliance plans to buy Onaro, a Boston company that develops storage management software, according to PC World.

The suite's components include an engine that models the relationships between components in a distributed system; a repository that monitors the storage services that applications need; and a change repository for tracking device and service changes.

NetApp said the deal will close in the first quarter of this year. Financial terms were not disclosed.
