Acquisitions by HP and Vodafone and some imminent major product announcements from HP dominated the international world of IT and telecommunications last week.
The analysis report from Next Generation on the two short-listed second national operator bids suggests that the situation is far from resolved.
Paul Booth, MD, Global Research Partners
At home, MGX`s disposal of Software Futures and Next Generation`s analysis report on the second national operator bids stole much of the local ICT headline news.
On the local front
* we saw very good annual results from Aplitec (revenue and net profit both well up) and WebSoft MAVeN (revenue and profits both well up);
* satisfactory 'continuing operations` year-end numbers from Comparex (revenue marginally up and back in the black);
* good interim figures from Control Instruments (revenue and net profit both up);
* a Q3 loss from Spescom Software, Spescom`s US arm (revenue up very slightly) and a profit warning from Set Point.
Other local news included:
* the formation of Affirmative Technology Services from the merger of CSMG, Z-IT and Hephaistion;
* the launch of Nambiti NextWave Consulting as the first black-owned SAP special expertise partner, a joint venture between Nambiti Technologies and Next Wave Collaborative Business Solutions;
* the appointments of Adam Jones as MD of Namitech Holdings and Isaac Zowa as MD of ATS;
* Dimension Data subsidiary, Datacraft Asia, sold off its stake in Singapore cabling company, EMS Wiring Systems, for $400 000;
* MGX sold off its Software Futures subsidiary for R20 million, 20% of the valuation of the company in 1998 when 60% of it was sold to CCH; and
* Pinnacle decided not to de-list from the JSE.
* Additionally, the Exact/Ferrer consortium has declined to better the Sage bid for Softline.
The analysis report from Next Generation Consultants on the two short-listed second national operator bids suggests that the situation is far from resolved, with shortcomings being highlighted in respect of both submissions. A recommendation to the minister is due from ICASA on 28 August, and indications are that this is not likely to be a firm endorsement for either of the two contenders.
New local distributorships included that of Adobe by The Core Group and that of Clearswift by Duxbury Networking.
On the international front
* we saw the closure of Ceyba, a Canada-based networking company; and
* the formation of a joint venture between Infineon Technologies AG and United Epitaxy for the manufacturing of fibre optic components.
Additionally, look out for the acquisition of Japan Telecom`s fixed-line business from Vodafone and the results of Vocalis`s discussions with Netdecisions over the sell-off its main trading division.
Other international news included:
* the appointments of John Blanchard as chairman of ADC, Simon Duff as CEO of NTL, James Fontaine as president and CEO of Microtune, Cameron Hunter as president and CEO of Norsat International, Keith Locke as president and CEO of TelSpan, Gary Morgan as chairman and CEO of World Information Technology, Richard Roscitt as president and COO of MCI, Robert Switz as president and CEO of ADC and Gary Warren as CEO of AppForge;
* the resignations of Barclay Knapp as president and CEO of NTL, Richard Roscitt as chairman and CEO of ADC, Sam Saifi as president and CEO of ION Networks, Yutaka Ueda as president and CEO of Norsat International and Hakan Uzan as chairman of Telsim; and
* job loss announcements from Applied Materials, AT&T Wireless, BearingPoint and ScanSoft.

The award in the Economic ICT category went to marketing agency, Three Blind Mice, for its innovation in satellite-linked broadcasting for educational and marketing purposes. It was also one of the two Grand Prix winners.
