Late rush for Y2K-readiness spurs `survival` software demand, says SDD

With more than 50 per cent of South African companies still not properly prepared for the possible chaos that the Year 2000 (Y2K) bug will cause, Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD) is expecting a last minute rush for Y2K "survival" software.

The company has now started shipping Symantec`s survival kit, which has been put together to help Small Medium Businesses (SMB)get through the millennium problems.

" It`s hard to believe that so many companies have disregarded the Y2K threat," says Shahil Kanjee, Symantec product manager at SDD. "But our feedback from the market is that companies are finally getting nervous and now want to do something about ensuring Y2K readiness.

"Luckily, it`s still not too late to prepare themselves and their business systems for what may lie ahead on January 1, 2000," he adds.

Symantec`s Norton Millennium Survival Kit is an SMB solution, targeted at companies with up to 500 PCs. It includes Norton AntiVirus, Norton Ghost and Norton 2000. It is priced at 50 per cent to 70 per cent less than it would cost to buy the products individually. It is only available with a minimum purchase of a 10-user license.

"As an all-in-one solution to help IT managers get through the millennium, there`s nothing else like it on the market at this price," says Kanjee. "They`re getting Y2K bug and virus plus a complete fast system ."

The `survival` kit also provides a solution that prepares bios, application software and for Y2K. It also protects against known and potential future millennium-specific viruses and provides a complete system back up, returning PCs to their original condition.

"The unique aspect about this kit is that it`s not purely a Y2K solution. Buyers are also getting ongoing virus protection from the Norton AntiVirus component, which can be easily kept up to date with the latest virus detection facilities and which is backed up by fast, expert support from Symantec," he adds.

In addition Norton Ghost is a key tool in helping to deploy systems fast prior to lockdown and to recover systems when problems arise. Norton 2000, in turn, is designed to deal with the reality of a dynamic environment and provides an ongoing audit of Year 2000 compliance.
