3Com Corporation has announced the release of DynamicAccess software, version 1.5. Available to new and existing 3Com networked desktops and servers, DynamicAccess software brings intelligence to network interface cards (NICs) through an integrated software suite that leverages emerging and existing network standards - improving performance, management and control in multi vendor environments. In addition, 3Com for the first time makes Fast IP available for non-3Com NICs. DynamicAccess software 1.5 delivers a broad array of solutions to network managers, including: * Traffic Prioritisation - based on the emerging IEEE 802.1p standard, enables network managers to specify the priority level that applications should receive from the network. It also maps 802.1p to the IP Type of Service standard, extending traffic control capabilities into the WAN; dRMON SmartAgent software, or distributed RMON - collects and reports full RMON network performance data even in challenging switched environments; * Fast IP - based on IETF Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP), accelerates Intranet performance by creating short-cuts across an existing switched infrastructure. Fast IP lets data avoid router bottlenecks, leveraging the speed of switching, while maintaining the control of routing; * Efficient Multicast Control - also based on the IEEE 802.1p GMRP standard, enhances network operation for emerging multicast-based applications. By allowing desktops to dynamically register and de-register to and from multicast groups with 802.1p-compliant switches, it provides efficient network bandwidth usage and improves processor utilisation in both switches and network nodes; * Intelligent Installation - provides remote installation and configuration of DynamicAccess software via login-in scripts or software distribution packages. Configurations are centrally controlled by network administrators and desktop users cannot change settings. Availability According to 3Com SA`s client access business unit manager, Dirk Bosmans, the DynamicAccess software version 1.5 is available now, free of charge, through a software download for existing 3Com Ethernet/Fast Ethernet desktop NICs and Fast and Gigabit Ethernet server NICs. Fast IP is available for non-3Com NICs at no extra cost also through software download. "In addition, DynamicAccess software 1.5 is currently available with a Tivoli Management Agent," he says. "Later this year, 3Com plans to offer a simple, low-cost software distribution application, based on Tivoli technology, to enable seamless DynamicAccess software installation and upgrades."
