LATITUDE Information Technology provides Engen with first 802.11g hotspot in SA

Johannesburg, 16 Feb 2004

Engen has appointed LATITUDE Information Technology to install the first South African 802.11g public wireless LAN (PWLAN). The solution will enable Engen forecourt users to access the Internet, synchronise their PDAs or laptops and access corporate applications such as e-mail. Now, stopping to fill-up means business goes on.

The trial environment was setup and connectivity was tested to the Internet from within the Quick Shop, the car wash and on the forecourt. The connectivity was measured at speeds of 54Mbps, which clearly identifies the benefits of an 802.11g environment. This solution not only caters for high-speed access but is also capable of introducing security management, thereby enabling full integrity of data access via this medium.

Sean Pickering, Business Development Manager for LATITUDE Information Technology, said: "The router function consolidates the network as a whole and facilitates the sharing of a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, thereby protecting technology investment and enabling a diverse services option to support an enterprise in a real-time environment (RTE).

"Data protection and privacy is enabled via encryption methodologies for all wireless transmissions on the G-Broadband Router. The router is able to serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through and can be configured to filter internal users` access to the Internet or office network. Hence, high-speed Internet connection can be shared and files, printers and multi-player games can be accessed with the speed, flexibility and security you need."

LATITUDE Information Technology enjoys considerable experience in the wireless and security domains. Its methodology enables business, personal and recreational access to IT-based solutions while ensuring transparency to the end-user.

This trial solution has been rolled out at Engen`s Edgemead Motors in Cape Town, and will be in operation for a period of time to assess all business and technical issues associated with a service of this calibre. Engen - with us you are number one.
