Mostert Opperman Goodburn attorneys is to stage a series of workshops to answer the top 10 questions businesses ask about e-mail and electronic records laws.

These include: What records must be kept and for how long; can we image documents and destroy the originals; what criteria should be considered before documents and records are destroyed; what is the legal status of scanned documents and microfilm; how long should e-mails be kept and do we need employees` written consent to monitor e-mails?

"Clarity on these questions remains elusive to most organisations, lawyers and auditors because of the lack of legal precedent from the courts. This is understandable as the technology and processes giving rise to these questions have only emerged over the last few years," says Wim Mostert, director at the firm.

The law firm will hold the workshops at Gallagher Estate on 17, 24 and 31 March.

The workshops will include talks by legal and records management experts on practical implementation of new legislation.
