Leader in ATM and frame relay switching equipment markets

Johannesburg, 26 Jan 1999

According to recent reports by leading market research firms, Nortel Networks has announced that its Passport product portfolio of multiservice switches and access devices leads the ATM and frame relay equipment markets.

International Data Corporation

(IDC), the Dell Oro Group, In-Stat, Dataquest and Vertical Systems Group (VSG) separately ranked Nortel Networks at number one in global market share in the multiservice wide area network (WAN), ATM, frame relay equipment and frame relay access device (FRAD) categories.

"The phenomenal sales momentum the Passport portfolio has achieved since its introduction in 1993 is attributable to the increased reliability, responsiveness, cost-effectiveness and security these products provide customers," said Nortel Networks managing director Doug Batchelor.

"Passport products can help customers meet their business goals by enabling Unified Networks that integrate the WAN and LAN, and provide a multiservice platform for data, voice and video."

Recent affirmations of Nortel Networks` ATM and frame relay market share leadership include:

  • IDC estimated Nortel Networks` share of the 1997 global WAN ATM and frame relay switch market at 19.5 percent. IDC also projected that market to grow more than 160 percent by 2002, to US$7.6 billion from US2.9-billion (about R18-billion) in 1997.

  • Both The Dell`Oro and In-Stat placed Nortel Networks first in multiservice switches sold to enterprises during the first half of 1998, estimating Nortel Networks` market share at 32 percent and 44 percent, respectively.

  • VSG ranked the Passport switch number one in the ATM enterprise WAN switch market in 1998 with 34 percent market share. VSG also ranked the Passport switch as the leading frame relay enterprise switch with 39 percent market share.

  • Dataquest ranked Nortel Networks number one in the 1997 worldwide FRAD market, with 27 percent market share.

  • The Dell`Oro Group ranked Nortel Networks the number one FRAD vendor by several measures for the third quarter of 1998: worldwide FRAD revenues, with 45 percent market share; worldwide FRAD ports, with 42 percent market share; and worldwide FRAD voice ports, with 61 percent market share.

Reinforcing these industry statistics, Nortel Networks also announced that it has sold over 20 000 units from the Passport product line of powerful data and multimedia networking solutions for enterprise customers and service providers.

This portfolio includes the Passport 6000 series of scalable, multiservice, enterprise switches that integrate LAN and WAN networking into a single solution; the Passport 7000 series of high fan-out, core switching solutions for service providers; the

Passport 4400 series of multiservice branch access devices; and the Passport 4120, a flexible data networking platform that optimizes legacy/LAN data consolidation requirements.
