Leading book printer grows with Oc'e

Johannesburg, 10 Feb 2010

One of South Africa's leading digital book printing houses has just bought its fourth Oc'e digital printing system to accommodate growing demand for its services.

Digital Print Solutions acquired its first Oc'e printer - a 3165 black-and-white system - when the firm first opened its doors in Cape Town five years ago. Since then, the specialist digital print company has acquired an additional two Oc'e 3165s and has just acquired an Oc'e VarioPrint 6160.

Digital Print Solutions' Dion Martin explains: “We chose Oc'e because, having dealt with them for the past five years, we are convinced that they offer the most technologically advanced machinery at the most competitive price. However, most importantly, they back up their product with great after-sales service. We did our homework and contacted numerous other vendors, but at the end of the day nobody could match Oc'e when it came to the complete package.

“In the time that we have been in business we have built up a strong working relationship with Oc'e that has developed into a working partnership. We started out as a small home business, printing a few thousand prints per month - we now produce a few million. In that time, Oc'e has supplied us with equipment as our business has grown.”

As a specialist digital print company, servicing the needs of publishers, advertising agencies, graphic designers and corporate clients, Digital Print Solutions has to offer its customers the latest technology solutions, which requires investment in the most modern up-to-date equipment and software. With the installation of the Oc'e VarioPrint 6160, a new digital front end and a host of finishing equipment, Digital Print Solutions is well placed to meet the demanding needs of its clients now and into the future.

The Oc'e VarioPrint 6160 is the first system to offer simultaneous double-sided digital printing, using lightning-fast Gemini Technology that has sparked a revolution in digital cut-sheet printing. The high volume system offers 100% accurate print registration and offset printing quality, and produces 171 prints per minute on both sides of a page simultaneously.

An area of speciality for Digital Print Solutions is Print on Demand books, which means that the customer no longer has to wait weeks for books or order thousands of books at a time.

“We specialise in servicing the needs of the book publishing industry, printing for some of the largest publishing houses, to the smallest independent publishers,” says Martin. With the Oc'e VarioPrint 6160, books for the academic market can be produced in days, there is no longer a need to have thousands of books waiting to be ordered and sitting on a shelf gathering dust. When changes to the contents of books are made, books held in bulk storage become obsolete. Digital Print Solutions can make the necessary changes and reprint the desired quantity of books at the flick of a switch. In a similar fashion, niche publications suited to a small specific limited audience are printed in a cost-effective quality way.

Digital Print Solutions also prints marketing copies, where it prints a limited number of books for marketing. It also makes it possible for authors to publish their own work, while training manuals can be printed in a professional looking format for a limited target audience.

Customers include authors, educational institutions, research organisations and training providers. The intention is to provide a Web to Print offering, allowing customers to access our virtual warehouse and order books online in quantities from of 1 to 1 000. Martin says: “We will thus offer true print on demand, eliminating the costly need to hold books in stock.”
