Johannesburg, 14 Jul 2000

Leaf Industries, the sole value-added distributor in Africa for Axis Communications, today announced the AXIS 2100 Camera. The 2100, which is the first network camera to be based on an embedded Linux platform, connects directly to Ethernet networks. The AXIS 2100 provides businesses with a simple, low-cost surveillance solution for multiple office applications. Axis is a leader in peripherals and connecting devices for networks.

A self-contained network camera with its own IP address, the AXIS 2100 can transmit live high quality JPEG images across the LAN, WAN and Internet at up to 10 frames per second. Any PC on the network can control, access and store images via any industry-standard web browser.

"The 2100 includes everything required for capturing and broadcasting live video streams over data networks and the Internet," said Ross Orwin, Business Manager for Axis Communication products at Leaf Industries. "Axis chose Linux as it is a stable, proven operating platform with exceptional application development potential."

Unlike basic PC-attached cameras, the AXIS 2100 connects directly to Ethernet networks but also provides an RS-232 serial port for driving a modem or ISDN/GSM terminal adapter where Ethernet ports are not available. Images do not have to be monitored constantly as upon an alarm/event or at a pre-set time images can be sent over the Network and/or stored in the AXIS 2100`s internal memory. When sent over the network images can be received as email. Compact and versatile, it is suited to the corporate office through to the small/home office. Target applications are in manufacturing plants, shops, nurseries, schools and hospitals. For a web user it is ideal for web attraction or various Intranet and remote monitoring applications.

The AXIS 2100, with its built-in Web server, operates independently from a PC and can be completely automated for sending images at specified times or by triggered events. With its all-in-one approach it represents a new generation of network camera. The AXIS 2100 supports TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP and SMTP.

"The AXIS 2100 is a true plug-and-play camera for Intranet and Internet image publishing and processing," added Orwin. "More people want to use live imaging to enhance web pages, provide for `light surveillance` such as server room monitoring and to facilitate live event broadcasting."

Axis` digital network cameras and video servers are based on its self-developed ThinServer Technology, which integrates all network functionality into the device itself, and the AXIS ARTPEC-1 controller, the industry`s first dedicated chip for network surveillance and remote monitoring. ThinServer combines embedded, streamlined versions of major operating systems such as Windows NT, NetWare, OS/2 and UNIX, optimised 32-bit RISC hardware and an open web-based management platform.
