Leaf upgrades free location software for HTC phones

Leaf Locate puts the power of online searchable mapping within the palm of your hand...find, discover, connect and share

Johannesburg, 19 Nov 2008

Leaf International Communications has updated its existing version of Leaf Locate mapping software, which is free to download off its Web site, and enables users a plethora of convenient features.

When you require directions to a specific address, or need to e-mail or SMS directions to a friend or colleague, this fast-thinking, hi-tech innovation is just the accessory that you need to have on your phone. “It's not just about locating addresses. Leaf Locate 1.2, version for HTC touchphones, lets users store their own favourite locations, plan their routes to a destination via another, or even via specified points of interest. The system has been updated to make our customers' daily routine a little more convenient,” says Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf International Communications.

Leaf Locate is a navigation application that is designed for HTC's Windows Mobile-based smart devices and is aimed at giving users a mobile map book and directory with added navigation features.

“It's like having a digital map book in your car, in your briefcase or in your handbag,” explains Quinton Leigh. “The maps are stored on Leaf International Communications' server, so users submitting a request to Leaf Locate 1.2 are connecting to Leaf's server, as opposed to storing excessive volumes of mapping software on the individual's cellular handset which would slow the phone down. Also, Locate uses a vector-based mapping engine, transmitting much smaller amounts of data. This makes the system faster and, of course, minimises data transmission costs.”

The new version can be used anywhere in Africa and includes maps for all parts of these countries. This is one of the benefits of Leaf International Communications' partnership with mapping experts and suppliers, Navteq. “Leaf Locate 1.2's maps are updated the very moment that Navteq releases new maps, which means that Locate offers the latest, highest quality maps at all times,” says Brandon Leigh, CEO of Leaf International Communications.

In addition, version 1.2 offers a unique start-up benefit which is referred to as “position me”. The software allows the user to locate their own position on the map after each start-up of the application.

Leaf Locate 1.2 is a value-add, free to anyone with an HTC phone and is downloadable from www.leaf.co.za. The system is especially convenient for users who don't have access to GPS software, and also to anyone in need of convenient directions on a regular basis, such as sales reps.

“The product is regularly revised so that our customers benefit from improved features.” For example the new “swish” feature on version 1.2 means that the TouchFLO technology allows interaction with the phone through clockwise and anti-clockwise thumb motion on the interface, also enabling the zoom function.

“Whether you need to find an address, locate a specific place; find a particular type of place, such as a petrol station, or get directions in order to plan your route, Leaf Locate 1.2 gets you the results you need,” concludes Brandon Leigh.

Note to Editor:

* Leaf Locate is only available on HTC Devices within South Africa
* Leaf Locate uses a data/Internet connection to connect to the Leaf Locate Map Server
* Please contact your service provider for information pertaining to the costs of data transmission.
