Leaf Wireless announces local distribution of i-mate range of mobile wireless devices

By Cameo Corporate Communications
Johannesburg, 24 Feb 2004

Local provider of mobile and wireless technologies Leaf Wireless has announced that it will be handling the official distribution of i-mate mobile products and accessories.

The company will be kicking off the local campaign with the distribution of two of i-mate`s flagship products, namely the i-mate Smartphone2 and the i-mate Pocket PC, Phone Edition.

Both devices currently come standard with the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile operating systems. I-mate`s tagline is `looks like a mobile - acts like a PC` as they truly cross the divide between the mobile and the PDA in a realistic form factor.

According to Quinton Leigh, managing director of Leaf Wireless: "We see the addition of the i-mate range to our existing portfolio as a key element to the future strategy of Leaf. These devices will allow us to start expanding our development of both business and personal mobile applications in a cost-effective and user-friendly manner."

Leaf has been increasingly receiving requests from customers for the provision of handsets that will allow the merger of both business and mobile applications - without the need to carry around a variety of devices. Leigh feels that through combining Leaf`s skills in the commercial software development arena and its support abilities, its delivery of the i-mate will make it a perfect solution for the South African mobile user.

Products will be distributed through the channel and the company is already working with a limited number of partners through which the products will be distributed. Leigh adds, however, that the company will be actively seeking new partners which are able to identify vertical market application opportunities.

The Microsoft Windows Mobile technology combines the technical elements of cellular technology with the basic business requirements of mobile PC platforms into a single device. It narrows the barrier between the phone and the PDA as allows the user a single point of contact back into their standalone PC or notebook, emphasising the personal area network.

"I believe that as a market we have matured to the point where application vendors who do not start embracing and supporting the logical extension to the provision of mobility based solutions are no longer going to be able to sell their services," ends Leigh.
