Today's business outside of the office is continuing to grow at an increasing rate. According to a forecast by analysis firm IDC, at the end of this year, there will be more than a billion mobile workers worldwide, and by 2013, more than a third of the world's population. That's 1.2 billion people who will have a mobile job.

The pocket-sized device can be used as either a WiFi router or 3.75G modem with the flip of a switch. This device seamlessly switches between 3G and WiFi so users need not have to hunt for a WiFi hotspot when outside to always stay connected.

When travelling at a place where WiFi connection is not available or in a moving vehicle, the DIR-457U's 3G function allows the user to stay online with high-speed connectivity. Through mobile broadband access, working on one's own schedule is possible, anytime and anywhere. There's no more need to rush to the office to send out quotation or search for a file. The user can e-mail via smartphone, receive/send quotes on the go, eliminate unproductive time when travelling on train, and even do personal banking. In addition, while checking e-mails on a laptop, the user can also download music from iTunes onto the iPod Touch.

With the DIR-457U, multiple Internet connection at the same time is easy. Simply insert the UMTS/HSUPA SIM card up to 16 users/clients via smartphones or notebooks to share the 3.75G Internet connection through a secure 802.11g wireless network. In this way, while out of office, the group of mobile co-workers need not have to waste time waiting for Internet connection or money to pay extra Internet bills.

“The DIR-457U can even act as a network access storage or NAS to enable a mobile group to share data efficiently,” said Van Schalkwyk. “There is a built-in microSD card slot, so you can put a memory card of up to 32GB to conveniently share files between WiFi enabled devices.”

The device includes a built-in 3G SIM card and a rechargeable battery to provide neater and easier use. The router, powered by the rechargeable battery, provides true mobility without cumbersome cable. Alternative power up connecting to the PC USB port or normal electricity is also possible. With the three power options, the device offers mobile workers extensive flexibility. The device is small enough to fit in a pocket, so Internet connectivity is possible wherever the user goes.

Like other 3.5G devices, the DIR-457U works through a mobile operator's 3G network to provide Internet access. The difference is, the DIR-457U device is compatible with a wide range of mobile service networks, so users are not bound to a specific carrier.
