Lessons learned from BBBEE

Johannesburg, 29 Mar 2006

Although most large corporate companies can cope with the issues around the broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) strategy, it`s still a mine field for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The purpose of the event is for the BusinessMap Foundation to share its experiences around the BBBEE strategy, particularly as relates to lessons they`ve learned with corporations that can be useful for SME companies. Furthermore, discussion around the codes of good practise applicable to SMEs will be held. The foundation`s contribution in this regard based on its wealth of experience in this arena.

Colin Reddy heads the black economic empowerment division of the BusinessMap Foundation. Colin has performed empowerment research work on the banking sector, the JSE Securities Exchange and mining, as well as developing an empowerment strategy for the NW province. He has done numerous critiques of empowerment including the Financial Services Charter, BEE scorecard and Broad Based BEE Act.

Prior to his job at the foundation he worked as a management consultant in the strategy and performance improvement area for a major consulting company.

Colin has an MSc Eng (Chemical) from the University of Natal and an MBA from the Wits Business School. As an engineer he has worked in the areas of petrochemicals and water. He has published papers on rural water supply. Colin has also performed research work on competition in the SA retail banking industry with respect to Michael Porter`s five forces model.

He has also visited businesses and government in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to study the East Asian business model. His interest lies in economics and philosophy and its strategic implications regarding SA, a far cry from his engineering background.
