Leveraging SAP's Adaptive Computing Infrastructure for SAP NetWeaver to consolidate, streamline IT infrastructure

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 2004

Sun Microsystems, Inc has announced that T-Systems, a SAP service provider in Germany and one of Europe's leading information and communications technology (ICT) service providers, has begun deploying an enhanced solution for its hosting services that supports the SAP NetWeaver platform.

The solution is designed to help customers derive significant cost savings by optimising the infrastructure of SAP solution-based environments. The T-Systems environment leverages the SAP adaptive computing capability of SAP NetWeaver for managing Sun Fire systems running the Solaris and Linux operating systems. With SAP adaptive computing capabilities, T-Systems can run any application on any server with an expected 30% improved data centre operational efficiency.

"We expect to see operational efficiency improved by more than 30% in our data centre," said Achim Stohr, Manager Application Hosting, T-Systems. By taking advantage of the capabilities of adaptive computing within SAP NetWeaver and combining that with Sun systems, we can offer customers a very compelling solution that drives down the total cost of ownership for their IT landscape.

Companies faced with diminishing IT budgets are looking to better utilise their existing computing assets and become more flexible to respond to rapidly changing business conditions. Sun's x86 systems are well-matched to SAP's Adaptive Computing Infrastructure by bridging software and hardware to help customers consolidate and streamline their IT infrastructure to better manage concurrent demand for hardware resources more efficiently. Software solutions are de-coupled from their hardware infrastructure, enabling a more flexible use of resources by matching the performance needs of e-business applications across the enterprise.

Sun has also successfully completed SAP's Adaptive Computing Compliance Testing for its Solaris OS platform. Thorough tests were done jointly with T-Systems staff at T-Systems' hosting facility in Germany and supported by T-Systems' focus solution SAP group.

Sun and SAP continue to push the envelope in terms of customer-focused solutions that solve real-world business and IT issues, said Stephen Borcich, vice-president, Partner and Industry Markets at Sun. In working with T-Systems to deploy SAP NetWeaver using SAP's Adaptive Computing Infrastructure, we're providing customers with choice and the ability to take cost and complexity out of their IT landscape and put it towards revenue-generating opportunities. Today's news follows several milestones in the alliance between Sun and SAP. At SAPPHIRE '04 New Orleans, Sun was awarded the Pinnacle Award for SAP NetWeaver Innovation. In March 2004, the two companies celebrated the opening of the Sun Excellence Centre for SAP NetWeaver in Walldorf, Germany. In 2003, the alliance celebrated the opening of the Sun-SAP Joint Java Technology Centre, housed in the SAP iForce Solution Centre, also in Walldorf.
