Lexmark does it for the children

Annual golf day raises R80 000 for Cotlands
Johannesburg, 23 Nov 2006

Lexmark's fifth annual CRIB (Cartridge Recycling Initiative for Babies) Golf Day was held at Dainfern Country Club on 16 November 2006.

The event, which is held to create awareness of Lexmark's cartridge recycling programme and raise funds for Cotlands, was a resounding success.

Golfers were joined on the field by local celebrities like Carte Blanche's Derek Watts and 94.7's Graeme Joffe, who also acted as MC for the evening's dinner and prize-giving.

Hans Horn, Managing Director of Lexmark International, handed a cheque of 2 117 Baby Days over to Jackie Schoeman, director of Cotlands, representing the Baby Days raised in the second half of 2006, and included 777 Baby Days raised by the Golf Day alone.

Baby Days are generated from the cartridge recycling initiative and one Baby Day means one day of care, clothing, food and housing for one child at Cotlands. Lexmark has donated a total of 4 112 Baby Days to Cotlands for 2006.

Says Hans Horn, Managing Director: "Since its inception in 2002, the CRIB project has been an undeniable success, and has raised in excess of 28 000 Baby Days. The golf day has become a popular event on the IT calendar, and always raises an impressive sum of money in support of Cotlands."

The cartridge recycling programme encourages home and business users to return empty cartridges for recycling. The cartridges are cleaned, dismantled, recycled and re-used in new plastic products, such as seedling trays. The CRIB initiative forms part of Lexmark's Siyabhambili Corporate Social Investment Programme, the name given to the various projects that the company is involved in to contribute to and uplift South African communities.

Concludes Horn: "CRIB is a two-pronged project. Not only does it provide much needed support for needy children in South Africa, it also encourages people to help save the environment by recycling. The success of the initiative is all about the support we get from our customers, business partners and the community. We could not do this without them."
