Lexmark, Kofax link network multifunction devices to electronic document management systems

Johannesburg, 19 Jul 2001

Venture Computer, the sole Southern African distributor for Lexmark International, today announced that Kofax Image Products and Lexmark International have certified an innovative Electronic Document Capture (EDC) solution that integrates Lexmark`s distributed network multifunction devices with the major enterprise document- and content-management systems.

The relationship between the companies integrates Lexmark`s networked multifunction systems with Kofax`s Ascent Capture 5 electronic document capture application. The new solution accelerates the return on investment for Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) and Enterprise Content Management (ECM), enables productivity gains and helps reduce operating costs.

"Ascent Capture pioneered the distributed capture concept with Ascent Capture Internet Server. And now Ascent Capture 5`s new open front-end architecture and Lexmark`s versatile and powerful networked multifunction products have made it a practical, widely available choice for the average end-user," said Kevin Drum, general manager of Kofax`s Ascent Business Unit.

Lexmark`s OptraImage line features modular, multifunction printers that deliver the benefits of distributed network printing, copying, faxing and scanning. Using a conveniently located OptraImage device, a user can easily select a document type -- eg invoice or new account form -- from the control panel and scan it onto their network. Ascent Capture receives, identifies and indexes the document either automatically or manually. The documents and associated indexes are then imported into the EDMS or ECM system. Lexmark`s Document Distributor software can also be used to e-mail, fax or print the documents automatically to other destinations as needed.

"Together, Lexmark and Kofax are enabling organisations to distribute network scanning throughout the enterprise," said Paul Rooke, Lexmark vice president and president of its Business Printer Division. "This allows users to reduce the cycle times of mission-critical business transactions by capturing documents sooner, more conveniently and economically than traditional centralised scanning environments."

Lexmark and Kofax will jointly market the new solution on a worldwide basis. Both organisations will continue to collaborate on the development of additional EDMS and ECM integration solutions in the future.
