Lexmark notches up 1 260 additional Baby Days for Cotlands

Johannesburg, 29 Oct 2003

Lexmark SA`s recently hosted second annual CRIB (Cotlands Recycling Initiative for Babies) golf day raised an additional 1 260 Baby Days for the Johannesburg-based Cotlands baby sanctuary.

The success of the Lexmark CRIB programme is based around community support and events like the CRIB golf day. Hosted at Dainfern, the golf day received overwhelming support from companies within the greater IT community, many of which are Lexmark partners and distributors.

The `Baby Day` concept spawned from Lexmark South Africa`s desire to start giving back to the local community and is part of its extended social investment programme Siyaphambili. The Baby Day converts to clothes, food, facilities and care at Cotlands for a child for a day.

The event attracted an enormous amount of attention from the media and based on its success has been touted by many of its supporters and donors as a `must-be-seen-at` event for the years to come. With support from celebrities like Highveld`s "My Pal Al" who played his d'ebut game at the event, as well as a spirited game and commentary from Graeme Joffe, it was not only lots of fun on the field but the evening held much amusement and entertainment from the likes of Abbot and Crab.

Hans Horn, MD of Lexmark SA, says: "The support we have received from our partners and additional donors has been phenomenal. It is through initiatives like CRIB that one can gauge the true lengths and breadths people will go to, to help their fellow man, and it has been rewarding to see exactly how many South African companies and individuals are willing to open their hearts and their wallets to look after our country`s children."

The ongoing CRIB initiative is one that Lexmark is very proud of and the company has managed to raise 3 800 days this year thus far. The overall target for the year is 7 000. In addition to events like the golf day, Lexmark makes a financial contribution to the Cotlands Baby Days fund for every empty Lexmark toner or ink cartridge it gets back from users. These empty cartridges are then cleaned, dismantled, recycled and returned for re-use in unrelated markets as new plastic products.

"We are continually identifying new ways to give back to the community and we recently assisted with the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra which too was a resounding success," ends Horn.
