Lexmark plays major sponsorship role second time running at SYO

Printer giant sponsors Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra second year running
Johannesburg, 13 Oct 2004

Lexmark SA is proud to announce it will once again assume the role of exclusive sponsor for the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra (SYO) to be held at the well-known Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on Saturday, 16 October 2004.

The sponsorship of this prestigious event has become a milestone on the Lexmark partner and customer calendar, and it is proud to be involved for a second year running. In addition to the sponsorship of the "In Concert with Lexmark" performance, the company will mark the event with the unveiling of its two SYO scholarship students.

Says Hans Horn, Managing Director of Lexmark SA: "The sponsorship of the SYO is an extension of the Lexmark SA vision to give back to the community in which it operates. As a company whose business is to some extent centred around creative expression through print, the SYO is a perfect fit for us as it is the ultimate expression of the beauty of music."

This not to be missed event will be for one day only and the musical scores for the day will include Fantasy on `Sleepers Wake` - JS Bach; 1st Symphony (first movement) - WA Mozart; 2nd Calrinet Concert - CM v Weber by soloist Annemari Bam; Hymn and Triumphant March from the Opera Aida - C Verdi; Fantasy of Hungarian Melodies by soloist Kathleen Taylor; and Huapango - Jose Pablo Moncayo.

The orchestra, founded 32 years ago, consists of scholars and students from the area, and will be led under the skilful baton of Canadian-born violinist Lona Antoniadis who has more than 27 years` experience in the musical arts. In addition to which Antoniadis has lectured in violin at the University of Stellenbosch where she currently fulfils a part-time lecturer role in addition to her duties as a teacher at the Johnman School of Music and Somerset College.

Adds Pierre Joubert, Chairman of the SYO: "The members of the SYO applaud the commitment of Lexmark for once again making this performance possible."

The two scholarship students being sponsored by Lexmark are Winston Cadman and Davina Gordon. Gordon has previously played in the SYO before enrolling for the Diploma in Orchestral Studies at UCT; while Cadman is playing both cello and percussion in the orchestra with the hope to shortly enrol for his BMus degree.

"Lexmark sponsored the performance for the first time in 2003. It was such a great success that we gladly offered to get involved this year. We are also delighted to be participating and aiding with the scholarship programme for the first time this year - to us scholarship and mentorship programmes are superior ways of reinvesting into the people of our communities," adds Horn.

All visitors are welcome at this `family` event, including children.
