LG Electronics` LG FLATRON is still leading the BT Global Challenge 2000/01, the world`s toughest yacht race, even after being knocked from first place in the fourth leg by BP.
En route to Cape Town, the LG FLATRON has been within the top three yachts for each of the completed four legs of the race, and is eight points ahead of the nearest competitor, Compaq.
Skippered by professional yachtsman Conrad Humphreys, the LG Electronics team numbers 52-year-old actor, Jeremy Irons among its crew members. The crew is truly international with members from Australia, Hong Kong, France and America.
"The BT Global Challenge is an ideal sponsorship opportunity for LG and is serving to re-enforce our position in the global market," says Deon Botha, account manager: IT products at LG Electronics SA.
The BT Global Challenge began in Southampton in September 2000 and has passed through Boston, Buenos Aires, Wellington and Sydney, still to head through Cape Town and La Rochelle (France) before finishing back in Southampton in early July this year.
The 12 yachts participating in the race are circumnavigating the globe, having to go against prevailing winds and currents. The entire race will take the yachts to seven countries in a little over 10 months.
