LGE DVD recorders to overtake VCRs

Johannesburg, 16 Oct 2000

LG Electronics has developed a DVD recorder ( Versatile Disc Recorder) that can record not only DVD titles, but also conventional analogue programs in DVD quality.

The product, which has added a recording feature to the conventional DVD player, is expected to overtake analogue VCRs once it becomes fully commercialised.

Says Jaehong Kim, product manager: IT products at LG Electronics SA: "Up to now, VCRs were more or less the only medium for video recording. This is to be revolutionised with the DVD recorder, which can record programs at a quality twice that of analogue alternatives. The DVD recorder is set to increase demand for DVD players even more."

LGE`s DVD recorder is based on the international recording standard of DVD-RW format (Ver 1.1) as determined at the DVD Forum of December, 1999, and with a memory size of 4.7GB, can record MPEG 2 streaming images up to 1,000 times on DVD disks.

Says Kim: "Conventional TV signals and camcorder video signals can be recorded for two hours in DVD quality, or up to six hours in analogue quality on the disk. It is an AV recording system for the next generation that can also easily edit recorded images in easy steps."

Along with DVD titles, users can also play audio CD and VCD.

LG Electronics plans to introduce the new DVD Recorder to the US market within the first half of 2001. It will be available in South Africa by the third quarter of 2001. LGE`s DVD rewriter drive for PC, which will be able to write 4.7G of information onto a DVD-RW disk, will also be available during this time.

"With the successful development of the DVD Recorder, LGE now has all core technologies for DVD recorders in addition to those for DVD optical disks, chip sets, players and optical pick ups," explains Kim.

"By adding DVD recorders, the core area of next-generation image technology, to its growing technology arsenal, LGE is undoubtedly strengthening its global competitive edge."
