Light Edge becomes Rose distributor: Technology for lower-cost data centre

Keyboard-video-mouse technology reduces costs in server management, and gives administrators unprecedented control, even over locked up machines on downed networks
Johannesburg, 13 Oct 2004

National IT distributor and hardware platform integrator specialist, Light Edge, has been appointed as the South African distributor of Rose Electronics` range of KMV (keyboard-video-mouse) switches.

These devices allow enterprise and SMB technology users to substantially reduce the costs of running a centre (both in hardware costs and administrator time), while providing considerable remote management functionality not possible through standard in-band -based administration tools.

"South Africa`s enterprise data centre managers are starting to adopt KVM technology as the benefits are so clear, and the return on investment so fast. Rose Electronics products are engineered to be incredibly reliable: you put them in, and they just work. They allow system administrators to interact with servers from wherever they are via a secure IP connection. The technology is specifically designed to provide a natural response - mouse and keyboard input happens virtually as fast as if you were right in front of the machine. Rose`s KVM systems let administrators large server farms without wasting time running backwards and forwards between servers, making their working day a lot more pleasant and efficient. Light Edge has taken on Rose Electronics product range because there is a huge need for KVM technology in this country, and the Rose products are so feature-rich," said Bobby Richter, technical director of Light Edge.

Rose Electronics` range includes the Vista range of two or four port KVM switches for SOHO, the UltraView range for the midrange, and the high-end Ultra Matrix range for large enterprise datacentres. The product portfolio also includes KVM Extension to allow keyboard, video and mouse control over multiple machines by secure IP network or dedicated copper or fibre connections. Other Rose products are RackView, a 1U rack-mounted flat panel monitor, MultiVideo, where multiple monitors can be driven from multiple machines (ideal for trade-floor applications), MultiStation allows one PC to be used non-concurrently by four users, PC42 allows one PC to be used completely concurrently by two users, and video splitters, which allow an image to be sent to multiple monitors (for video wall applications).

"KVM technology is standard with most European technology users; emerging markets are now also starting to see the very clear benefits. It`s a necessity that many IT managers don`t yet know, just in terms of the time it can save them and their staff. You also save space in the data centre not having to have loads of monitors and keyboards, you reduce air conditioning and power costs, you reduce administrator time overheads, and a well designed KVM system is more natural to use than many of the remote console services built in to operating systems like Windows and Unix," explains Tony MacKenzie of Rose Electronics.

Rose Electronics switches give a system administrator full control, even to the point of being able to remotely cycle power (often the only solution to a badly hung server) - even if the network is unavailable because Rose`s dedicated cabling system allows out-of-band control.

Ultra Matrix also supports remote serial ports, allowing remote control of critical network devices as well.

Light Edge will distribute the products as well as provide first line technical support and consultancy. Products are available immediately.
