As part of MTN's summer campaign, the company is discounting certain calls at certain times by 100% for the next 100 days.

The company started MTN Zone in February last year, boosting the low-end take-up of mobile in SA. The original concept was to randomly discount callers by up to 95%, depending on the time of day and day of the week.

The offering depends on how much traffic is being passed through a particular area on the company's . Essentially, calls in areas with lower traffic will be discounted. The offering has been well received in SA and in other African countries like Uganda, where MTN invested $2 million to roll it out.

The company has now increased the discount to 100% depending on the time of day and location. Calls at four in the morning could well be free, while calls at seven in the evening may be charged at the full rate.

While the company says the discount will be available to customers during both peak and off-peak periods, it is unlikely its network will be quiet enough for a high discount during peak times.

However, Zone customers will receive a guaranteed discount for a block period during off-peak hours every day, as well as during weekends. “It allows for predictability, which MTN Zone customers have been asking for.”

SMS bundles, daily free SMSes, premium-rated and promotional SMSes are not included in the promotion. Customers must also have airtime loaded to take advantage of the discounted calls.

To check what discount will be available, customers can dial *135#.
