The popular professional networking site, LinkedIn, will roll out an update to its 'People You May Know' tool.

According to LinkedIn, since the service's launch, the 'People You May Know' feature has helped “millions” of professionals to grow their networks through the personalised suggestions the feature provided.

Senior project manager of search and social graph at LinkedIn, Brad Mauney, says the upgraded feature now offers a streamlined user experience and improved accuracy and relevance of the recommendations.

The new interface is also more visual and photo-centric, and the list of recommended connections is now much longer.

“Behind the scenes, our algorithm identifies people you may want to connect with based on factors like your existing network, past workplaces, and where you've gone to school. With these changes, you'll see more relevant results as you scroll down the page,” says Mauney.

Users can also now refine the results by selecting the logo of a specific organisation, business or school.

Mauney says the updated feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks, but users wanting to activate the update already can do so by following this link.

LinkedIn filed for its initial public offering early last year, and went public in May with one of the most sought after listings in recent years.

The service is said to have grown its user base by over 160% in the last two years to a total of more than 150 million users. The number of corporate customers added over the same period is said to have increased by 450%.

Statistics from World Wide Worx showed that, towards the end of last year, LinkedIn had reached 1.1 million users in SA, 83% growth from 2010 to 2011. An estimated 10% or 112 000 South African LinkedIn users are said to be business owners.
