Linking needs and innovation at Futurex Conference

Johannesburg, 21 Apr 2004

There is a lack of new business ideas, and businesses are too focused on short-term benefits.

This is the view of Gartner Executive Programmes director Jim Arnott, who will also be a keynote speaker at the Futurex Conference.

Arnott`s presentation will focus on linking business needs, technology and innovation. "I will also look at some of the approaches that we found have worked for organisations," says Arnott.

Arnott believes businesses now have a lower tolerance for than before, and that, coupled with shorter time horizons, has caused companies to focus on short-term benefits.

"Businesses have become more cautious about what IT can do for them. I will examine how CIOs can inject stronger business-value and focus into the technology planning process to restore the balance between today`s needs and tomorrow`s possibilities."

According to Arnott, another key trend is the changing business view of emerging technologies, as companies start to lower their expectations. "The business view of emerging technologies is changing and the emphasis is on tangible results," he says.

"If you look at the past few years, there was always an expectation that some new technology would actually shift the dynamic and change things dramatically. But the expectation is less now. If it is going to change, it will be from a combination of technologies, like mobile and ."

Arnott says his presentation will take a holistic view of the market. "I won`t be focusing on specific technologies themselves, but rather how organisations choose which technologies to follow."

The Futurex Conference, hosted by ITWeb, will run alongside the Futurex Exhibition at the Sandton Convention Centre between 18 and 20 May.
