Locally designed QP5000, QP6000 UPS ranges from Square One Power ideal for SA conditions

Johannesburg, 17 Apr 2003

Critical loads, whether they are from switched mode power supplies in computers or other sophisticated electronic equipment, or typical industrial loads such as rectifiers or motors, require the highest reliability possible from any UPS support solution.

The QP5000 and QP6000 ranges of UPS systems from Square One Power Solutions, the uninterruptible power specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, are designed and manufactured in SA to meet South African conditions

Square One Power Solutions managing director Neill Schreiber says the design philosophy is based on a combination of advanced techniques, simplicity, minimal components, a quality manufacturing process and rigorous testing to ensure the highest possible degree of stability and reliability.

There are five models in the QP5000 range of single-phase input and output units. The ratings are 5kVA, 8kVA, 10kVA, 15kVA and 20kVA. The basic design ensures that output remains controlled within very close limits with low output distortion.

"The main advantages of the design are that it achieves a high input power factor of typically 0.97 and high system efficiency of typically 95%," says Schreiber. "The ability to cope with the harshness of South African conditions in terms of heat, dust and in the coastal area, high humidity, is another advantage."

The QP6000 range is based on a double conversion design. Output voltage is controlled within close limits with low output distortion and all four units in the range, rated at 5kVA, 10kVA, 15kVA and 20kVA, have a three-phase input and single-phase output.

Schreiber adds that the units are fully protected against internal and external faults via circuit breakers and fast-acting fuses. Switchgear used comprises an input circuit breaker, output isolator, bypass isolator and a fused isolator for the batteries.

All units are SNMP-compatible and are supplied with advanced multi-protocol CPU communication to allow full function remote analyses to be conducted from any computer environment via an RS232 interface and UPSILON software.

The digital display provides simultaneous information for input voltage, output voltage, output current, output frequency and DC voltage. Faults are indicated on the display with a simultaneous alarm sound. Alarms monitored are high DC shutdown, UPS overload, battery discharging, low DC shutdown, battery critical, load on bypass, over temperature and input out of limits. Standard batteries are maintenance-free with projected life spans of three to five years. These can be housed either inside the UPS cabinets or in separate matching cabinets, depending on the application requirements.
