Logitech appoints Rectron as SA distributor

Johannesburg, 20 Feb 2002

Logitech, the international market leader in human/computer interface devices, has appointed Rectron as a distributor in SA. Rectron will focus on developing the OEM and the small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) dealer channels.

"We`ve experienced tremendous growth in SA over the past eight months and we`re now ready to extend our Logitech and Labtec product ranges beyond our initial focus in the computer sector to the wider mass OEM and dealer channel markets," says Shawn Bezuidenhout, sales and marketing manager at Logitech South Africa.

"Rectron`s hardware and component experience make it an ideal partner to help us move into these market sectors. It`s a very sound company with a solid record in this market."

Rectron has now taken delivery of its first Logitech consignment and is actively marketing to its dealer channel. Point-of-sale material and sales aids are also available for dealers.

Rectron is marketing Logitech`s prime product range of top-selling cordless, optical and traditional keyboards, mice, trackballs, webcams, cameras, speakers, and games devices including a new PlayStation range. It will also be distributing Logitech`s Labtec budget range of devices, including its new microphones and headsets, as well as the Logitech Black Label OEM range.

"We identified Logitech as a company we wanted to represent in SA since they first arrived here, so we`re particularly happy to have this distributorship," says Mark Lu, Rectron CEO.

"Their innovative, competitively priced product ranges complement our other activities in both the OEM and dealer channel fields, and we expect to generate substantial sales. We see PC devices and accessories as one of the few growth areas in the PC market in the year ahead," he says.

Bezuidenhout too is projecting substantial sales increases across the product range. Sales are currently growing at a rate of 100% a quarter in SA. The company`s global performance is also exceptional. It is currently growing at 30% quarterly and has just recorded its tenth consecutive quarterly growth.

He attributes these increases to the fact that PC users have stopped chasing processor technology and instead, are buying accessories such as webcams, speakers and microphones for their desktops to be able to use more of the features in their desktop software, such as Internet phones, video conferencing and speech recognition technology.

In targeting the OEM market, Logitech is expecting to leverage Rectron`s position among the country`s top five PC assemblers and believes there is a huge market potential for its Black Label OEM range of keyboards, mice, speakers and webcams, including new optical and cordless versions.

"Any assembler looking to add value to white boxes will find our Black Label range very competitively priced with the quality endorsement of Logitech products," he says.

Other OEM offerings include Logitech`s non-branded White Label range, allowing assemblers to brand the products themselves.
