Lotus Development has extended Lotus Domino to desktop and e-business application platforms by making it easier to integrate Lotus Domino Release 5 (R5) Application Server capabilities within IBM and Microsoft environments.
"Customers will now be able to tightly integrate Domino`s collaborative
capabilities into their e-business solutions, including MS Office and Outlook, or IBM`s WebSphere Application Server," says Lesego Tlhabanelo , marketing communications manager at Lotus Development SA. In this enhanced release 5.05, Lotus is providing an expanded collection of features that enable customers to build teams and use internal knowledge - such as process management, document workflow, email and calendaring, instant messaging and team workspaces - using Domino and existing skills and tools.
New features include tools designed to allow Microsoft Outlook and Office users to save and access files or documents - including e-mail, Web or desktop application materials - in central Domino databases.
"This allows customers to enhance their document-based applications wit h the collaborative capabilities provided by Lotus Domino," says Tlhabanelo. Additional features deliver technical integration between IBM WebSphere
Application Server and Lotus Domino, such as a Single Sign-On (SSO) opt ion between servers and Java application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable shared identity and access control.
"Combined with recently announced product bundle and services, this technical integration enables a new class of scalable e-business applications, spanning the transaction processing capabilities of Web Sphere and the collaborative capabilities of Domino," he says.
The new version of Domino will help improve time to market and leverage scarce IT resources by providing integration with customers` existing products and infrastructures.
"Domino`s open approach to client support allows IT departments to depl oy server technology without the need for resource-intensive desktop migrations or user retraining," he says. Domino already supports widely deployed clients including Lotus Notes, Web browsers, POP3/IMAP mail clients, newsreaders, mobile devices and PDAs.
Key technical features in the latest version of Domino include:
Domino Off-Line Services add off-line capability to any Domino application, enabling features such as collaborative, security, and replication services to be accessed from a Web browser, ensuring full functionality even when disconnected from the network. Domino Web mail has been off-line enabled in this release, providing the ability to access a Web-based mailbox offline.
iNotes Access for Microsoft Outlook supports the use of Microsof t Outlook as a mail/calendar client utilising a Domino mailbox. As part of the iNotes client, Outlook users benefit from access to Domino`s collaborative applications and unparalleled mobility services.
WebSphere Single Sign-On enables Web users to log on to Domino o r WebSphere once, then access the resources of either server without logging on again. This simplifies the process of creating and using applicatio ns that marry the collaborative power of Domino with the transactive power of WebSphere.
Domino Collaboration Objects opens options for Microsoft Visual Basic, C++ and Active Server Page developers to quickly and easily integrate Domino`s collaborative capabilities into Internet applications through the Microsoft Component Object Model (COM).
Lotus Connector for OLE/DB extends Domino Enterprise Connection Services (DECS) and Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI) connector to native connectivity for Microsoft SQL Server.
