Lucent Technologies today announced the new ORINOCO high-speed wireless Internet access and networking system. Building upon Lucent`s WaveLAN wireless LAN system for business and enterprise, the ORINOCO family now adds new home networking products, as well as products designed to provide secure, high speed Internet access in public hot spots like universities, office complexes and airports.
Whether for home, office or travel, all of these systems utilise the same ORINOCO PC Radio Card. Formerly known as the WaveLAN PC Card, the ORINOCO PC card provides high speed wireless networking and secure Internet access for laptop and desktop computers, as well as a wide range of mobile computing devices. The ORINOCO system also includes various access points that act as base stations for the wireless users as well as provide a high-speed connection to the Internet.
"Imagine being able to fully access your email and corporate files while eagerly waiting for your aircraft to roll up to the gate," said Gerard Glanville, distribution director at Lucent`s Enterprise Networks sub-Saharan Africa division. "This is not a slow trickle of data, but full wideband Ethernet-level data networking delivered without wires. No longer will networked computer users struggle to connect cables or Internet surfers be limited to using their portable computers within a few feet of a wall jack. ORINOCO gives freedom to computer users."
Based upon the industry standard IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi)-compliant technology, ORINOCO provides 11Mbps speed over the unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum, with ranges of up to 365 metres. The ORINOCO PC Card fits into almost any laptop or mobile computing device and is compatible with other 802.11 compliant systems, including the popular Apple AirPort system.
Different infrastructure access points are used for various types of buildings and organisations. For the home and small business, the inexpensive and easy to install RG-1000 Residential Gateway access point provides wireless Internet access as well as functioning as a network base station. In the enterprise and campus environment, a powerful ORINOCO WavePOINT-II access point provides additional levels of security, robustness and roaming features required for business. Finally, for travellers and business hot spots, an ORINOCO public area access server (AS-1000), provides secure high-speed access with full authentication and billing capabilities.
The ORINOCO Outdoor Internet Access (formerly WaveACCESS) technology is also available for ISPs and large companies who need high-speed outdoor wireless Internet access and networking systems with up to a 16 kilometres range.
