Lucent Technologies today announced it will be joining the recently formed 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance as one of its founding members. The mission of this new organization is to promote 10-Gigabit Ethernet for local area network (LAN), metropolitan area network (MAN) and wide area network (WAN) markets, and to support the IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet standards process.
In addition to Lucent, the other founding members of this consortium include 3Com, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, Intel, Nortel Networks, Sun Microsystems and World Wide Packets.
"Lucent demonstrated the first working prototype of a pre-standard 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN product at last year`s spring NetWorld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas. We look forward to working cooperatively with other industry leaders to accelerate 10-Gigabit Ethernet technology," said Doug Ruby, vice president and chief technology officer of Lucent`s Enterprise InterNetworking Systems group.
"We believe," continued Ruby, "we can make substantial contributions in the development of 10-Gigabit Ethernet, with advanced technologies developed by Bell Labs, that will benefit Lucent`s customers in markets such as Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing, where Lucent already has a substantial installed base."
Positioned as a high-speed technology for networking applications in LANs, MANs and WANs, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will combine very high bandwidth with simplicity. In LAN applications, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will enable enterprise network managers to scale their packet-based networks from 10 megabits per second (Mbps) up to 10,000 Mbps and thereby leverage their investments in Ethernet as they increase the performance of their networks. In MAN and WAN applications, 10-Gigabit Ethernet will enable Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Network Service Providers (NSPs) to create very high-speed links at very low cost between co-located carrier-class switches and routers.

The 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance
The 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance was organized to facilitate and accelerate the introduction of 10-Gigabit Ethernet into the networking market.
Additionally, the Alliance will support the activities of IEEE 802.3 Ethernet committee, foster the development of the 802.3ae (10-Gigabit Ethernet) standard and promote interoperability among 10-Gigabit Ethernet products.
