M-Web has introduced the online South African encyclopaedia in English and Afrikaans.
The site, developed by Naspers and M-Web, is aimed at high school students. It uses local content such as information on the 2004 elections, South African achievers, an up-to-date health and AIDS survey, South African politics and a sports update.
"The fact that it is an online tool enables us to update the information regularly. This is particularly important in SA where our history is evolving and not accessible in book-form encyclopaedias," says JP Farinha, GM of studios at M-Web Home.
The encyclopaedia is also available in Afrikaans since 65% of M-Web`s research-related queries are from Afrikaans-speakers.
"The Afrikaans version has been introduced to help those looking for information in their home language. This not only makes it more accessible to younger Afrikaans-speaking learners, but also to English-speaking learners having trouble translating subjects into Afrikaans," says Farinha.
The site is available online exclusively to M-Web and MSelect subscribers for free, while the offline version is available for purchase on CD-ROM. Schools can also license the use of the product on their local network for R299.
