Kaspersky Lab has unveiled an anti-virus offering designed specifically to protect Macintosh computers from all types of malware.
According to the company, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac offers protection from Mac OS X viruses, worms and Trojans, as well as combating similar threats for Windows and Linux operating systems.
Kaspersky says Macs have become increasingly popular, making the multiplatform computer an integral part of many home and corporate networks. The release of Mac OS X has made the interaction with Mac computers considerably easier, but also vulnerable to malicious attacks, the company observes.
In order to protect mixed networks more effectively, the product has access to Kaspersky's global anti-virus database, which includes information on more than 20 million malicious programs for a range of platforms. According to Kaspersky, this ensures users are protected against the latest malicious programs appearing in large numbers every day on the Internet.
Securing multiple systems
Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac also scans files and e-mail attachments downloaded from the Internet. To address the need for distributed use of systems resources, the priority of the anti-virus scanner declines when user activity increases. This offers the user complete access to the computer's system resources and increases the performance of user applications, states the company.
Shared folders on virtual machines are gaining popularity with both corporate and home users, says Kaspersky. The Anti-Virus for Mac product prevents the transfer of malware from Windows or Unix virtual systems to the work environment, which is of great importance for those working with several operation systems on a Mac computer, advises Kaspersky.
Being well aware that an attractive interface is a must for Mac applications, Kaspersky has equipped its offering with an animated interface that is user-friendly both for novices and more experienced users, says the company.
According to Kaspersky, the Anti-Virus for Mac was designed to meet the needs of the Mac OS X operating system, offering complete compatibility with all versions of the OS from 10.4.11. Other technical requirements include: a Macintosh with the Intel processor, 512MB available RAM, and 80MB available hard drive space.
