Madge`s On-line Cost of Ownership Calculator enables network managers to evaluate the real expenditure, including equipment costs and staff training, required for planning network upgrades.
"The On-line Calculator allows users to enter easily details of their Token Ring infrastructure and network priorities to estimate the cost of different upgrade options, such as implementing Token Ring desktop switching and High Speed Token Ring (HSTR) versus migrating to Ethernet," explained Madge Africa MD Peter Turvey.
"All costs are itemised so that network managers can see the assumptions made in the calculations which take into account the complexities and costs associated with migration to Ethernet."
The tool also presents business benefits for building upon existing Token Ring networks for the future.
"Ripping out Token Ring to install Ethernet involves massive expense," Turvey said. "Network planners need to take into account the business risks of network downtime on their mission-critical networks.
The cost of a major equipment purchase, considerable labor and training expenses together with the purchase of ancillary equipment to support the change must also be considered."
