Madge Networks N.V, a global network solutions provider, plans to invest US$85 million over 24 months to build out and strengthen its global network and datacenter infrastructure to support its service provider business.
The plans call for an upgrade to Madge`s existing 30-country network, Madge net through the addition of an ATM 55-node backbone. The network is to be built to an architecture that ensures the highest possible fault tolerance and availability, featuring a distributed and layered IP/ATM fabric. The infrastructure also deploys multiple resilient transmission paths, with each node capable of switching multiple gigabits. The network will support customers with mission critical applications, such as traditional Private Networking, Virtual Private Networks and Internet Commerce. In addition, Madge will offer global networking services to carriers and ISPs.
To provide a seamless Internet application service for customers, the network will be linked to 10 web hosting datacenters across nine different countries. New Network Operation Centers will be established in the US and Asia. Managed 24x7, these centers will complement the existing state-of-the-art facilities in Europe.
Madge aims to put more than half of the ATM network into place within 12 months, along with two datacenters in the US, four in Europe and one in Asia. The design of the network and datacenters is the result of work by Madge telecoms and Internet engineers, and is being implemented in close working partnership with Nortel and Hewlett-Packard, among others.
Robert Madge, chairman and CEO of Madge Networks commented: "I am very pleased to be announcing the next stage of expansion of our global service provider business. In principle, electronic business knows no frontiers, and we are making this vision a reality through the provision of a reliable, high performance global infrastructure. We will soon be one of the few companies worldwide to offer a global integrated service of managed networking and web hosting."
John Wheeler, senior vice president at Madge added: "We have a range of customers, some are taking their first steps towards IP networking while others are engaged fully in Internet Commerce. Our new investment in the global network and datacenters means we can meet the common needs of these customers, which include guaranteed-reliable networking, assured-service web hosting, local datacenters and network access, as well as global reach."
