Sun Microsystems, Inc announced that KTF has licensed Java technology from Sun for its mobile data services. A milestone in the adoption of Korea's national standard for mobile phones, this agreement will support Korean mobile operators to complete its transition to Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability (WIPI) and to take advantage of global Java technology economy.
Since its introduction in 2001, WIPI has become the standard mobile Internet platform in Korea. In April 2003, KWISF (Korean Wireless Internet Standardisation Forum) chose Java technology to serve as a core component of WIPI. This ushered in a new era of advancement for Korea's mobile data services platform, marked by interoperable, standards-based technology and global development of next-generation wireless technologies.
Sun welcomes KTF, a leading carrier in one of the world's most advanced mobile markets, to the Java community, said Alan Brenner, Vice-President, Consumer and Mobile Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. KTF can now leverage the strong mobile Java ecosystem already in place to satisfy consumers' demand for rich mobile applications and services.
"This is a significant achievement for Sun Microsystems and the Java community, said John Jackson, Yankee Group Senior Analyst, Wireless/Mobile Technologies. The Korean Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has advocated successfully for a common, J2ME-based client software environment across Korea's three main operators. With KTF now licensing J2ME, developers can address the entirety of this highly innovative market by focusing on a common applications platform."
Sun has been working closely with the KWISF consortium to jointly develop and commercialise the next version of WIPI. By April 2005, WIPI will be Korea's official wireless Internet standard.
With Java technology-enabled handsets, consumers are able to personalise their handsets with applications such as games, infotainment and location-based services, while companies can offer mobile employees secure access to corporate networks. There are currently over 350 million Java technology-enabled mobile devices deployed by 31 handset manufacturers through 93 operators worldwide.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - "The Network Is The Computer" - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW) to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
