MakeIT streamlines production process for Spes Machines

Johannesburg, 23 Apr 2003

MakeIT, supplier of production management software to the SME market, has concluded a deal that will see one of SA`s leading designers and manufacturers of In-the-hole (ITH) rock drilling tools, Spes Machines implement the Visual EstiTrack solution in an aim to improve operational efficiency and quality.

Founded in 1970, Spes Machines has specialised in designing and manufacturing Down-The-Hole (DTH) or In-the-hole (ITH) drilling tools for more than two decades. According to Reg Taylor, MD of Spes Machines, the decision to partner with MakeIT was an obvious one. "MakeIT demonstrated a clear understanding of our business requirements," says Taylor.

"The state-of-the-art database software, the sales presentation, the proposed implementation of the system and the support were all crucial elements in our decision. This implementation reinforces our position in our industry, not only in SA but on a global scale," says Taylor.

Taylor explains the challenge that faced his company: "We manufacture over 1 000 different items and manual production planning, involving several sub-contractors is extremely difficult. Through this implementation we`ll be able to reduce our administrative costs and significantly improve our efficiency and quality."

According to Mark Tarboton, technical sales consultant at MakeIT, Visual EstiTrack is designed to assist the smaller manufacturer in streamlining processes, leading to improved efficiency and cost savings. "Visual EstiTrack has been specifically formulated to aid the smaller manufacturing market. The software is a hi-tech, yet user-friendly shop management system for job shops and the smaller manufacturer who requires the ability to monitor actual cost and labour throughout the manufacturing process," he says.

Taylor has high expectations of the implementation. "We expect better management of the manufacturing process, greater efficiencies, better quality and reliable deliveries. This is not a hope, but rather a belief. Visual EstiTrack is simply a management tool, albeit a powerful one, but the information it will provide is invaluable," he explains.

Tarboton adds that Visual EstiTrack helps control every aspect of the manufacturing process allowing the manufacturer to balance the workflow, which improves customer service at the same time as increasing efficiency and productivity. "This then leads to noticeable improvements to the bottom line," he concludes.
